Many of you are
probably familiar with the classic 1964 holiday special, Rudolf the Red-Nosed
Reindeer - about a little reindeer with a shiny, red nose. As the story is told, you learn how one tiny
little deer, though having a physical difference, dramatically changes the
course of the holiday season by leading Santa through the fog to deliver his
gifts to children everywhere. The moral of the story is that though small and
"different", that anyone has the power to be someone extraordinary.
When we think about this
timeless children's tale, we discover a little animal who desperately wants to
fit into the crowd. Try as he might, he is mocked and ridiculed for his glowing
nose. His peers decide he is unworthy of being part of the reindeer team. In
fact, Rudolf's own father does not accept that his own son is unlike the other
boys in the herd. But after joining a gentle "misfit" elf on a
journey to self-discovery, they both soon learn they are not such misfits at
all. In the end, they realize that they are capable of extraordinary achievements. This truth can be yours as well.
If you feel sometimes that
you are self-limited by any mental or physical differences, it does not mean
that you cannot accomplish remarkable
achievements in life. What it does mean is that while you may be a little
different, it does not make you less of a person than the next. In fact, you
are probably even more unique because of your special differences. Just like
the story talks about putting one foot in front of the other, this too, is
something you must do in order to create
a happy and successful life for yourself. You cannot wallow in sorrow over
a difference that has not truly impaired you from becoming the best you can be.
You get to choose how successful you
want to be. There is no limitation too big to keep you from doing and accomplishing amazing things in your life.
What's
stopping you? The larger takeaway from the classic tale of Rudolf the Rednosed Reindeer is that you have to make the choice to
be greater than yourself and any shortcomings you may have. Despite what others
may think of you, despite what you have been told by others, you are a perfect creation who is
capable of doing almost anything you set your heart to do.
Just like
the story, you will face adversity, you will encounter challenges, you will be
told that you cannot do something even when you can. Do not allow external
influences to rule your life, nor enable those influences to make you feel
badly about yourself and your capabilities. No one has that type of power over
you. No one can make you feel any certain way and no one can stop you from becoming the greatness you are destined to
be.
In life,
it is guaranteed that you will run into obstacles. How you decide to overcome those obstacles is up to you.
Do you face adversity head-on? Will you look beyond the challenge to rise higher
than the bar that has been set for you? Or will you give into your fears, your
frustration, your anxiety, and the feelings associated with everything you think is holding you back from doing
what you want to do with your life? I believe that Rudolf teaches you that you
are special in every way. I believe that this age-old story teaches you that
you can move beyond your feelings to
create the life you are destined to
live.
