There is an old English
expression that says, "Put your
money where your mouth is." This old adage is directly connected to
putting words to action. "You can talk the talk but can you walk the
walk" is yet another good example of the same. I have heard people talking
about achieving their dreams, but
when it comes to making a go at it, they fail to do so. Why? For the most part, the same folks who boast and rave about all
the opportunities they can pursue, are the same folks who will quickly default
on those opportunities because they do not have the heart or willingness to put forth the effort.
Victim of circumstance or
self-prophecy?
The same holds true for
those who are miserable or resentful about their life circumstances. These
individuals lament about their sorrowful dispositions in life: "I am so
unhappy with my life," "I am tired of this dead-end job,"
"I am not smart enough to do that job," "I can't find the right
person for me," "I am sick of always being picked last," "I
am tired of always being broke," or my all-time favorite, "I never
had those same opportunities." If I had a nickel for every time I heard
these self-fulfilling prophecies, I would be a multi-millionaire. The problem
in most of these cases is that individuals become so preoccupied with their own
self-misery that they feed off of it. It is easier to complain about everything
wrong in life opposed to actually rising above these circumstances and
proactively doing something about them. Don't become your worst own enemy by
continually calling yourself the victim. The only victim in this case is your
potentiality and your prospects.
Putting words to action
means that you must stop limiting yourself based on uncertainties you have
formed about yourself and your abilities. It also means bringing your life to
another level by refocusing your attention on more productive outlets to grow
and prosper. No, you may not get everything you want all at once -- that hardly
ever happens (for anyone). But what it does suggest is that instead of
concentrating on the gazillions of excuses you have of the "why you don't
have something", you begin concentrating on how you can change your life
for the better. It really is up to you.
You just don't understand
I've heard that before,
too. When someone tells me they are "unable to do something" or they
"can't achieve something", the next infamous line is, "You just
don't understand." Believe me when I tell you that I come from humble
means. It is because of my self-determination and commitment that I have grown
into the person I am. We all have hardships, we all experience failures, and we
all deal with defeat and sorrow in our lives. I believe all people are born
with the same opportunity to succeed. For some it may be small successes, for
others greater successes. Success in any form is still success. The difference between those who succeed and
those who do not is: those who can, will
-- and those who won't, cry foul. Which one are you?
