Have
you ever read one of the Disney fairy tales where the mean witch locks away the
beautiful princess and a handsome young prince comes along on his magnificent
white steed, magically rescues her and then they live happily ever after? Or
just like many modern-day action movies, a last-minute hero or heroine steps up to the plate and saves the day? They are
always fun to read or watch; but in reality, you cannot wait for the hero to
show up at your doorstep so you can live
happily ever after. In truth, you are the one who must be your own hero.
If you are honest with yourself and you look back at your life, you will often find
there have been times when you have created your own misery and self-destruct
modes. Maybe you made a bad choice
along your journey - and that is
okay. It does not mean that you must continue to make the same choices. Once you have identified
costly decisions of the past, you
will understand the steps you need to take to make things right in your life.
You start seeing progress on your journey when you take the initial
first step in seeking real solutions for issues you have been neglecting. If
you continue to fall into your own traps, then you have to regroup and refocus your efforts on making the right choices for yourself. For example, if your
finances are in shambles and you know that you spend too much money on
nonessential items, then you need to write down a list of priorities for
yourself. What is it that you need
the most? What can you stand to do without in your day-to-day living? Yes, it
is that simple. That is the easy part. The challenge is sticking to your list
and keeping true to it.
Maybe you are struggling
with relationships. If you have a pattern of empty or broken relationships,
then maybe the problem is how you perceive
those relationships and how you interact on personal and even professional
levels. If you are carrying around baggage from past failures, then you cannot
have productive relationships in the here and now. In this case, I would recommend creating a
pro and con list for yourself. On the pro list, write all the positive traits you are seeking. On the
con list, write all the traits that are a turn-off to you. Now review the list
carefully. Singer, songwriter Jennifer Lopez once remarked, "You mirror what the world mirrors to
you." So if you find some of the traits (on your list) you do not like
to be your own, then you must change yourself first.
When you are the hero in
your own life story, you do not make excuses; rather, you make success happen. The opportunities that you have missed in your
life are still there, you just have to rediscover
them. Do not wait for a knight in shining armor, a prince on a steed, or Wonder Woman to show
up in your life to create happiness
and success for yourself. When you
decide that life is too important to sweat the small stuff, regret the negative
stuff, and lament on all your woes, you suddenly discover that your journey is
just beginning. In fact, as you become the hero
of your life, you begin to champion
your dreams, achieve your goals,
and realize your destiny. No more
waiting for someone or something to enter your life because you can do it when
you are willing to go the extra mile.
In the end, you are the
hero of your story. Only you can live
the dream you want to live. Learn to rely
on yourself by first loving yourself
and forgiving yourself. After you
do, you will feel the weight of the world lifted off your shoulders. Everything
becomes lighter, your life becomes
crystal clear and before you know it, you will be living the dream and living
in joyfulness.
