It is most important
to set some time aside just for you daily even if it is just for a minute or
two. Not only do you deserve it
but you also absolutely need it. Why
you might ask—for your overall
well-being and peace of mind. I
was speaking to a young man the other day who was sharing with me that he has
been so busy with projects at home and his job that he doesn’t have time to
even eat lunch. He was expressing
his anxiety and stress and not even aware that he was getting angry on the
phone as he was speaking. He
believed that if he works hard and long that he will be rewarded. Life doesn’t work that way. Working smart is the answer and in the
smart category there is what I call “me” time that must be acknowledge and
adhered to if you want to feel happy and healthy.
Too many think that it
is okay to deprive themselves from the luxury of enjoying the pleasures of
life, It can be as simple as
watching a sunset or as extravagant as a trip to Paris but what ever it is,
pleasure brings about an
instantaneous surge of joy and gratification. We all need it and we all deserve it.
I believe taking a
break for yourself goes beyond the basic needs category; taking some time out
for you is required if you want to live a balanced and harmonious life. I have noticed for me that when I
experience a simple joyful moment like feeling a delightful breeze that blows
my hair and feels good against my face, it causes me to recall a pleasurable
moment—I take a deep breath in and say, “Yes” I deserve to feel that way—thank you God for this moment of bliss. It has the power to energize me as a
surge of peace and tranquility prepares me to move onward and upward.
Enjoying pleasure is
key. It allows you to improve your
attitude of mind; it feeds your soul and enables you to gain a better
perspective about yourself and your life.
Deprivation on the other hand is synonyms with loss, hardship and
denial; not a nice picture to
imagine or choose to experience.
You have to take risks
to experience pleasure some say but the point is you need to take the
time—break away from your routine and allow yourself to treasure your
pleasures. If you are a
personality who has a hard time doing something nice for yourself, maybe this
is the time to give it a chance and see if you can create a habit for you that
brings you joy.
A good way to start
this exercise and experience pleasure can be:
- One pleasure can be a cupcake of sinfully
delicious chocolate mixed with peanut butter
- One pleasure can be an expensive glass of
wine that allows you to pucker and dream pleasurable dreams
- One pleasure can be a beautiful view from a
mountain-top that takes your breath away
- One pleasure can be indulging in a good
lunch with someone who makes you laugh
You get the idea—take
a break from your routine today and enjoy the pleasure of the moment. You just might create a habit that you
want to live with!
